What is BPA in plastic?

February 10, 2020 By Claire Knight

BPA is a chemical that is found in many plastic related products. Many individuals and experts do believe it is harmful as well. Continue reading below to learn more about BPA.

What is BPA?

BPA’s full name is bisphenol A. It is a product found in many plastic products as aforementioned, to make them more strong. The BPA also allows BPA to have the ability to be resilient to damages and drops as well.

BPA was discovered initially in the 1980s, but it started being used in plastic not until the 1950s. It is commonly utilized in hard plastics such as containers, water bottles and baby bottles. It is synthetic in that it is able to be created and mixed in a lab.

Where Can BPA Be Found?

Many products label themselves as BPA free, so many believe that BPA is not found in these products. It is important to note, however, that BPS and BPF are found in these products that are byproducts of BPA. There are several items that contain the original BPA, however. You can know if something contains BPA or one of the byproducts by an indicator of a 3, 7 or PC. Items where BPA is found include sporting goods, glasses, electronics, toiletries, plasticware and even fillings for cavities. Though BPA is found in so many places, it is potentially harmful to one’s health.

Can BPA Enter My Body?

It is possible for BPA to enter a human’s body, especially through consuming products. When eating food or drinking food from a plastic container that contains BPA or one of its byproducts, it is possible that some of the particles escape into the food or beverage to be taken in by the body upon consumption. Many individuals’ BPA levels were reduced when not eating pre-packaged meals, showcasing BPA’s entrance into the body. It is common for even babies who are bottle fed to have BPA in their bodies.

So, is BPA Actually Harmful to Me?

As mentioned previously, many individuals and experts alike believe that BPA is potentially harmful. BPA follows many of the properties of the hormone known as estrogen. Due to this mimicry, the chemical can change estrogen related processes in the body including growth. It can even influence the functioning of other hormone related centers in the body like the thyroid, significantly providing health risks. Many countries have already banned the chemical, and many individuals are encouraged for the US to do the same in banning the chemical to protect the health of everyone.

Specific BPA Effects

There have been proven results to many of the effects BPA has. Due to its estrogen like qualities, BPA has the potential to cause women and men to become infertile. Some women have more miscarriages with high levels of the chemical in their bodies.

Growth can be stunted among babies who have had significant exposure to BPA. Even if their parents were exposed, newborn babies can weigh less. Finally, there is an increased risk for many health factors including obesity, diabetes and heart disease. There is a chance for even brain problems, immune system problems and liver problems, among others, though more research is necessary on these areas.

How to Stay Away from BPA

With all of this information, you may be wondering how to prevent BPA from entering your body. There are some steps you can take to minimize your exposure, though it is nearly impossible to completely eliminate exposure to BPA. Trying to stay away from it is possible, however.

One practical step you can take is to avoid any foods that are packaged in a plastic container and only drink beverages that are served in glass. If you see any of the indicators on a product, do not buy the product. Finally, be sure to not microwave plastic as BPA can be emitted from the plastic.

Final Thoughts

BPA is a chemical found in many plastic products that has the potential to cause significant health risks. These risks can be present in adults and children alike. Try to avoid BPA related products in order to best keep you and your family healthy.
